The Oxbow Nature preserve next to Russett is one of a kind.
Oxbow Lake consists of over 70 acres of wetland and lowland
wood swamp in the floodplain of a former oxbow of the
Little Patuxent River in western Anne Arundel County.

The "oxbow" is now a small shallow lake created and influenced by
beaver activity and may be the largest naturally occurring fresh
water lake in Maryland.

The Oxbow's well being is watched over by many very dedicated individuals
and home to many types of wildlife. The Oxbow is actively visited by
bird watchers, nature lovers and home to many types of water birds.                             

Over the past several years, there has been a steady effort put forth
by a few motivated Russett and Maryland City homeowners to have an Oxbow overlook
platform built that will allow a safe public view and handicapped accessibility.

Seed money has been generously provided by the Laurel Park Impact Fee
Advisory Committee for construction and design work.

Russett and Maryland City homeowners have been keeping the effort alive with 
the help of USDA's RC&D and MD DNR.

Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation is also
involved with helping to bring this excellent public project to fruition. 

A basic design concept has been completed. With that in hand, the above parties can
continue their search for additional construction funds from various public and private sources.
